DISCIPLINE POLICY

October 24, 2007

A HANDS-JOINED APPROACH TO STUDENT DISCIPLINE (Albert, 1996)

Level 1 Offenses:Violation of a classroom rule or procedure.  (Handled by classroom teacher.)

Your child’s teachers will conference with your child; an appropriate consequence will follow.

The teacher will conference with you by telephone and send you a notice regarding the offense.

If a student fails to complhy with classroom rules/discipline on three occasions, the Discipline Committee will hold a meeting that will include the teacher, the student, and the parent. An Action Plan, designed to improve the student’s conduct, will be developed during the discipline meeting.

If a student fails to demonstrate the conduct outlined in the Action Plan, more serious consequences will result. (See level 2.)

The teacher will follow-up with the Discipline Committee regarding the status of the student’s Action Plan and the plan will be adjusted as necessary.

Level 2 Offenses:Serious classroom disruptions and/or chronic and continuous conduct such as bullying, harassment, tantrums, continuous horseplay that leads to injury, fighting, etc. (especially when an Action Plan has been developed.)

The principal handles level 2 offenses which may include after-school detention, suspension, or a District hearing.

After the appropriate measures have been taken, and parents have been contacted, the student and parent will attend a meeting with the Discipline Committee and an Action Plan will be developed.

The principal and/or the Discipline Committee will monitor the student’s progress.

Level 3 Offenses: Behavior that leads to the strong likelihood of “bodily injury,” “weapons violations,” and behavior that includes “credible threats.”

Level 3 offenses are always handled by the principal.
