National Educator, Dr. George J. McKenna, III to Visit University City Schools

The School District of University City is sponsoring a special evening with nationally renowned educator, George J. McKenna, III on Monday, February 4 beginning at 6 p.m. at University City High School (UCHS).
McKenna developed and implemented the Preparatory School Model, a program that stresses academic excellence at all levels and has been replicated by schools throughout the country. Based upon his experience, he is considered an inspiration to educators. The evening presentation is also open to the community.
During his University City visit, McKenna will discuss the importance and responsibility of educators to provide “Culturally Relevant Education.” He believes educators can be more effective teachers if they understand the culture of their students.
McKenna currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools in Pasadena, Ca. His many accomplishments have been featured in such publications as Time, Wall St. Journal and People. He has also appeared on the CBS Evening News, ABC’s Nightline and The Oprah Winfrey Show. Additionally, he is the subject of an award winning movie entitled “Hard Lessons” starring Denzel Washington. The movie, which is free and also open to the public, will be shown on Thursday, January 31 in the UCHS auditorium at 4 p.m.
