UCity School Board Approves The Naming Of The UCHS Field Hockey Field In Honor Of Long-time Coach, Virginia Dicus!

Coach Dicus served as a long-time teacher, coach, leader, and mentor. She ran the field hockey program from 1938-1977. During her time at the U the sports program for girls developed and grew including a broad spectrum of intermural activities and varsity athletics. Her dedication and efforts gave students teamwork skills, opportunities to participate in sports (before title IX), a lifelong love and appreciation of sports, as well as values and character development that have influenced her students throughout their lives. Coach Dicus sponsored the sixth grade camping program, giving high school students the opportunity to serve as counselors and develop leadership skills. She also sponsored student leadership activities, and student council. She advocated for and supported students in their leadership and service in the school and the community to promote good relationships, understanding of others, and respect and celebration of diversity. Following her retirement in 1977, Virginia Dicus continued to serve the University City School District in various volunteer roles. She has worked on bond issues, the educational Excellence Committee, and participated on the Superintendent's Advisory Council. At 95, Coach Dicus continues to be an outspoken advocate of public education and a strong supporter of all who serve in the betterment of educational opportunities for all children. In 2000, a group of Alumni established the "Virginia Dicus Humanitarian Award', a scholarship awarded to an outstanding UCHS senior annually. It is my honor to announce the naming of "The Virginia Dicus Field' to celebrate and honor a great person that has had a huge and lasting impression on thousands of students, past present, and future. Join us on the 17th at 4pm to see 80 years of Field Hockey History live and in person and, welcome Coach Dicus back to her home away from home on "The Virginia Dicus Field" Home of University City Field Hockey!
