UCity High Field Hockey Team Celebrates 80th Anniversary; Team to Honor Former Head Coach Virginia Dicus

October 11, 2008

Current and former University City High School (UCHS) students, athletes and coaches will celebrate the Field Hockey Team’s 80th anniversary on Friday, October 17.

The celebration begins at 4 p.m. at the school’s field hockey field located at Shaftsbury and Hanley in University City.  During the festivities, 96-year-old Virginia Dicus will be honored and the hockey field will be dedicated in her name.

Dicus ran the UCHS field hockey program from 1938 to 1977.  She was also a teacher and mentor at the school.  During her years at UCHS, Dicus is credited with growing and developing a number of intramural and varsity athletics for girls prior to the implementation of Title IX.  The federal mandate prohibits the discrimination of women and girls in sports activities.

Following the pre-game festivities, the UCHS field hockey team will take on Kirkwood High School, a rivalry that has existed since the 1920’s.  For more information call 290-4106.
