Destination UCity
Over a five month period that began in July and ended in
November, several hundred staff members, parents and other
stakeholders attended the Destination U. City Schools meetings to
discuss issues related to four district imperatives – student
achievement, finances, facilities and community and family
involvement. Feedback generated from the meetings produced a number
of recommendations aimed at moving the district forward and helping
to define its future as an educational destination.
As a result of board approval, the district’s administration will
seek passage of a $53 million no tax rate increase bond issue in
the upcoming April 2009 election. If approved, the funds will help
finance the construction of two new schools on the sites where
Barbara Jordan and Pershing Elementary Schools are currently
located as well as renovate several existing buildings. The
recommendations also call for comprehensive academic reforms as
well as new grade level configurations.
