Destination UCity Information

Over a five month period that began in July and ended in November 2008, several hundred staff members, parents and other stakeholders attended the Destination U. City Schools meetings to discuss issues related to four district imperatives – student achievement, finances, facilities and community and family involvement. Feedback generated from the meetings produced a number of recommendations aimed at moving the district forward and helping to define its future as an educational destination.

As a result of board approval, the district’s administration sought passage of a $53 million no tax rate increase bond issue in the April 2009 election. With significant community support, the bond issue passed. These funds will help finance the construction of two new schools on the sites where Barbara Jordan and Pershing Elementary Schools are currently located, as well as renovate several existing buildings. The recommendations also call for comprehensive academic reforms as well as new grade level configurations.
