The Elementary (Kg-6th grade) Summer Learning Academy is being offered at two sites. Since the passing of PropU, two locations without the potential for construction were chosen for the safety of our students and staff. Delmar-Harvard and Nathaniel Hawthorne will house the Elementary SLA. Students currently enrolled at Delmar-Harvard, Flynn Park, and Pershing will attend the Delmar-Harvard location. Students currently enrolled at Barbara C. Jordan, Jackson Park, and Nathaniel Hawthorne will attend the Nathaniel Hawthorne location. The elementary program is designed to meet students’ needs in communication arts and mathematics as well as provide an enrichment component in the form of academic clubs. Trends in elementary data are analyzed to provide the academic focus for the communication arts and mathematics courses. Lessons are strategically planned to meet the needs and interests of the students and are implemented through quality instruction. The academic clubs are designed by each teacher based on their interest as well as the students. Students select a new club each week to provide them with a variety of high interest opportunities. Some examples of the clubs offered last year are: Cooking Across Cultures, Personal Fitness, Reader’s Theatre, Poetry Slam, The Science of Gardening and list goes on and on.
